Friday 9 December

The Space, Nottingham Contemporary

A day-long event, presenting how food is bought and sold in cities, and how that affects our use of public space. The symposium investigated different models of urban food production and looked at how different artists have chosen to investigate the function of various urban spaces; from allotments to marketplaces. The Keynote speaker was Carolyn Steel, author of Hungry City, which follows food’s journey from land to city, through market and supermarket, kitchen and table, waste-dump and back again, to show how food affects all our lives, and impacts on the planet. The event  formed two discussion panels including additional speakers from like-minded art projects in the public realm as well as key organisations in the community local to Sneinton Market itself including Sneinton Alchemy, Sowing Sneinton and Sneinton Market Traders.

Additional speakers included acclaimed artists Nina Pope – from artist duo Somewhere who discussed What will the Harvest be? a community garden project in Abbey Gardens, East London; artist and curator Clare Patey responsible for organising Feast on the Bridge;  and John Newling, who spoke about Preston Market Mysteries.
